Is the Managed Server compatible with my network and ISP? E-mail

The ONS server requires a full-time broadband connection and will work with any broadband DSL or T1 Internet Service Provider that can provide you with a static IP address on a standard RJ-45 Ethernet jack.

Our preferred installation is:

  • ADSL (1.5M/256K) or T1
  • Static IP address
  • A hardware firewall between your network and the DSL router/modem
  • A switch with at least 100 Base-T and one Gigabit port to connect your server to your workstations. The Gigabit port requirement boosts network performance and is recommended if you expect very high loads or if you have more than 10 computers.
  • You already own a domain name which points to your DSL connection.
  • Windows® XP, XP Home, 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, NT 4.0 Workstation, NT 4.0 Server

Not recommended:

  • Cable modem or satellite-based Internet service
  • Dynamic IP
  • 10 Base-T hubs or switches
  • 100 Base-T hubs.
  • Windows® 95, 95 OSR2 98,98 SE, ME,

Not supported:

  • Dialup access only (56K modem)
  • Thin-net, or coaxial Ethernet
  • Non-TCP/IP networks such as Novell IPX, Token Ring, or AppleTalk.
  • Windows® 3.1, 3.11, Windows® for Workgroups
