Why is the case locked? Can I get a key? E-mail

The case has a tamper-resistant lock and an intrusion detection system that secures access to both the inside of the case and the removable media drives such as the CD/ROM and floppy disk drive. The reasons for this lock are as follows:

  • Without this protection, anyone with physical access to the server could potentially bypass security measures we have in place to protect your data and compromise your information security. The lock and other measures help us to detect that this has happened so that appropriate measures can be taken.
  • The hardware is ONS property and ONS is totally responsible for the proper operation of the server. If other parties were permitted to open the case and add, remove, or reconfigure components we would have no way to ensure the performance, reliability or security of the server.

Security Note: There is no type of lock that can be placed on the server that can prevent someone who is determined enough from simply stealing the entire server and your data along with it.  Since ONS has no control over the installation site, the physical security of the server is entirely the customer's responsibility and you are financially responsible for any loss or damage to our equipment.  We will work with you during pre-installation to identify a location for the server were there is limited physical access and least risk from other hazards such as water, fire, and chemicals.
