What settings do I need to change on my PC's to use the server? E-mail

As a part of the server installation, we will help you reconfigure your computers. If you buy new computers or somehow lose the settings, it's a simple matter to do it yourself and we provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to do this in our FAQ's.

There are several changes to workstations that are needed in order to fully utilize the capabilities of the server. This is a brief explanation, but more detailed explanations of each of these steps are available in the FAQs.

  1. Create your user account (if necessary) Your user name and password on your computer should be the same as the user name and password on the server. Otherwise, you will be prompted to enter this information more often.
  2. Check your network settings. Open a browser window and enter "www" as the URL. If your settings are correct, you will see a web page. Unless you have changed the default settings of your PC, your network settings are set automatically when you first reboot your computer after the server is installed. Normally all workstations should be configured for DHCP.
  3. Your email settings.  You will need to add an account in Outlook, Outlook Express, or whatever email program you use to tell it how to send and receive email through the server. You will need to know your user name and password on the server and the name of the server.
  4. Adding network drives.  You can add additional drive letters that reside on the server. Examples are your home drive (\\server\username), your personal website (\\server\MyWebPages), your backup files (\\server\Backups), and the shared file areas (\\server\common);
  5. Adding printer drivers. If you use the shared printer attached to the server, you will need to log onto your computer using an "administrator" account and add the printer (\\server\printer). You will be prompted to select the brand and model of printer that you have.
  6. Adding the fax printer. Adding the printer (\\server\fax) will install everything you need to be able to send faxes.  Briefly, to send a fax you print to the fax printer, then check your email for  a message "Your fax is ready to send" In this email are links to preview, send, and check the status of your fax.
