Can I move/shutdown/reboot the server myself? E-mail

Important! Never touch the button on the front of the UPS or the switch on the back of the server. This will instantly power-off the server and interrupt all services. This could corrupt the software and data on the server.

Important! If you need to move or shutdown the server for any reason, even if it is a few inches, please call ONS customer support!

Your critical business data is stored on the server. Moving it improperly or while it is operating can damage the hard drives. The damage may not appear for weeks, or even months.  Even what you might think are "small" knocks and bangs will degrade the long-term reliability of the system and increase the risk of a system failure and data loss.

Important! Never attempt to switch off the server, test the UPS or plug anything into any connector on the server or the UPS. The server is designed to operate continuously for years. Turning it off and on reduces the reliability of the system and may very well corrupt the system software or you data if it is done improperly.  We can test the UPS or initiate a safe shutdown remotely if that is required.

If the utility power does goes off, the server will automatically switch to battery power and will run for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on load, before executing a safe power-down.  If the beeping of UPS bothers you too much, we can reconfigure it to power-down sooner. However, our goal is to keep the server running as long as possible in the hope that utility power will be restored before the UPS battery is exhausted and avoid a power-down and restart.

ONS managed servers normally are only rebooted a couple of times per year due to operating system upgrades and are powered-down once per year for preventative-maintenance.
