What printers can be attached to the server and shared? |
|
|
Printers that can be used with ONS Managed Servers must: - be fully supported by your workstation's operating system.
- be designed to be shared over a network.
- have an appropriate printer driver installed on each workstation.
- be connected to the server by a parallel port , also known as a "Centronics" interface. The USB interface is not supported for printing.
- be connected to the server using an IEEE 1284-compliant cable that is no more than 15 feet long.
- never be powered by the server's UPS. Laser printers can draw a great deal of power during printing. If connected the server's UPS, they may cause unreliable server operation due to low voltages during printing. This is especially true during the summer months when utility voltages tend to be lower due to heavy usage. Instead, connect the printer's power plug directly into a wall outlet. If possible, use an outlet on a different circuit breaker from the server's UPS.
Note: Most inexpensive color inkjet printers do not have the capability to be reliably shared over a network due to limitations in the software provided by the printer's anufacturer. Normally, shared printing is only done for laser printers because they are larger and more expensive. ONS can help you determine if a particular printer can (or should) be shared. Please contact Customer Support with the brand and model of your printer. We also need to know the operating system(s) that you plan to use with the printer.
