What is needed to install a Managed Server? E-mail

Before we can configure and install a server, we'll need to gather information about your users and your network.  If you don't have some of this information, or you don't understand exactly what we are asking for, don't worry! We will review your network and obtain everything on-site.  However, if you can answer some of items, we can save some time and make the process go more quickly.

  • The exact legal name of your business.
  • The postal address where the server will be installed.
  • The results of the command "ipconfig /all" from a PC on your network.
  • The type of broadband connection you have (DSL/T1) and your Internet provider name.
  • Two IP addresses that are unused on your network and not assigned to DHCP.
  • Your fax line telephone number.
  • Will your users be allowed to make long distance or international fax calls?
  • Are there any calling card numbers to be dialed for outbound fax?
  • Your main telephone number.
  • An after-hours telephone number, if available.
  • The full names of each user and their desired (short) user names (e.g. Fred Jones, fjones)
  • Which users need to be able to check their email from a wireless or remote location?
  • Do you plan to use the server's public or private websites?
  • Do you need to offer secure (https) web pages to the public?
  • Do you have someone that does website design for you?
  • If you would like to have additional email addresses, a list of their names and who the mail should go to. (e.g. refunds -> maryk  sales -> johnq ) You can have as many as you like.
  • If you several departments, what are their names? (e.g. sales, admin, marketing)
  • What brand and model of parallel printer will you be attaching to the server?
  • Can you provide a dedicated fax line to the server?
  • On the telephone line that will go to the server, do you have "dial 9" to get out?
  • On the telephone line that will go to the server, is there "Caller-ID"?
  • What are your normal business hours?
  • The name of the person that will receive incoming faxes.
  • The name of the administrative contact.
  • The name of the technical contact (if any).
  • The name of your domain(if any) or what you would like it to be.
  • The location within your office where the server will be installed.
  • A list of your workstations and what generally what software they have installed.
  • A diagram showing your network layout (including hubs/switches/router/PC's)
  • The credit card type, account name, number and expiration date of the billing credit card.
  • What are the critical applications you use in your business?
  • Do you use Microsoft Exchange Server, SQL Server, or Terminal Server?
  • Do you use the shared calendar feature of Microsoft Exchange?
  • If you need more than 100GB of storage, the amount of additional storage.
  • If you have a server now, what software is installed on it?
  • Do you have a hardware firewall? What is the brand and model?
  • If you have a DSL connection, what type of DSL modem/router do you have?
  • The telephone number, account name and password for your DSL account.
